West Surrey & NE Hants
Maltings Monthly Market

The West Surrey and North East Hants group took a table at the Maltings Monthly Market in Farnham on the first Saturday in November.
Elizabeth and Tony Cooper, who have supported The Society since it first started, together with Vicky Robinson, sold Christmas cards and gifts to raise money for the National Eczema Society. They were delighted to double last year’s takings!
Lord Mayor’s Show

We were delighted when Helen Lovegrove from the West Surrey and NE Hants support group got in touch to say that we had again been selected as one of the charities to help sell programmes at the City of London Lord Mayors Show. For every programme we sell we raise a pound for the National Eczema Society. With a friendly crowd, brilliant floats and displays, Helen’s excellent organisation and some seriously effective and experienced programme sellers, this is a good day out while raising much needed funds.
Saturday 14 November dawned wet, windswept and dismal but nothing daunted our intrepid team assembled in the City at 8.30 a.m. and set off to sell their wares spurred on by the thought that every programme sold means money for the NES - not to mention one less to carry!
Mayford Village Quiz Night

On 28th October, the West Surrey and North-East Hants Support group hosted a Quiz night at the Mayford village hall. Organised by Sarah Lovegrove, the quiz was devised by Simon Pearson who also acted as the quiz master on the night, helped by his wife Dawn who kept the scores.
It was a full house, with 90 people taking part in the quiz, and the raffle tickets selling well for the super prizes on offer, all of which were donated by local businesses and individuals.
The quiz was won by 'The Densa' team made up of Paul and Marion Bendle and Barrie and Anne Luckham. Everyone had an enjoyable evening and a total of £563.00 was raised for the Society.
Vicky Robinson set up her stall selling the Societies Christmas cards and gifts and did a brisk trade during the interval and at the end of the evening, taking over £90.00
A huge ' THANK YOU ' must go to Simon for spending so much time setting the questions (there would not have been a quiz night without him). Also thanks to all the people who helped set up the hall and clear away at the end of the evening, including Veronica and Peter Cannon (who also sold the raffle tickets), Belinda and Ivor Davies, Louise and Brian Drew and Mounsey Robinson.

Wrapaganza/Street Collection
The annual Wrapaganza/Street collection took place during National Eczema Week on the High Street in Guildford. Darth Vader was well wrapped once more to raise awareness of eczema whilst other entertainment included Superman and a punk fire eater! Helping to run the event was Avril Vora and Sarah Lovegrove (pictured) as well as Anne Kinchin, Ruth Mason, Vicky Robinson, Judy Norman and Brian Miller.
Emma completes a London Half Marathon

Also in National Eczema Week was the ‘Run to the Beat’ Half Marathon which this year was run by Emma Hall in aid of the National Eczema Society. Congratulations to Emma who raised over a hundred pounds for the Society and continues the number of running events Emma and Emily Robinson have been entering over the past six months all for charity.
Apple Day 2009

For the West Surrey and North-East Hants group, Apple Day is an annual family event which aims to raise the profile of the National Eczema Society. It is held in a marquee at The Farmers’ Market, Secrett’s Farm in Milford.
This year, there was information about apple crushing and pressing, not to mention many apples to taste, some of which could be bought from neighbouring stalls. The apple activities, including a juggler and a photography competition, proved very popular and also available was literature about the Society.

The Lord Mayor’s Show 2009 – a golden fundraising opportunity! - 14th November
The streets of London really are paved with gold for the National Eczema Society at this annual event as our team of fundraisers help to sell official programmes to members of the public who have gathered to witness the age-old spectacle.
Every programme sold raises £1 for the National Eczema Society, which means that every volunteer can make a genuine difference to the lives of those with eczema.
Each year this simple act raises thousands of pounds to support our work – and the more pairs of willing hands, the more programmes we can sell!
Can you help us to make 2009 the biggest and best year yet?
Join the West Surrey and North-east Hants Group, and other long-standing supporters, on Saturday 14 November to make this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show a record-breaking year.

British 10k London Run 2009 & Adidas 5k Challenge

Sunday 12 July saw Emily Robinson and Emma Hall line up alongside 31,000 fellow runners at the start of the British London 10 km.
Emily, whose brother Tom has suffered very badly with eczema his entire life, knows first-hand the impact the condition can have on a family, while Emma – who now lives with Tom – has witnessed the daily treatment regimen required to manage his symptoms.
Regular training sessions and the support of the crowd meant that Emily and Emma completed the race in 1 hour 5 minutes – having overtaken three chickens and an egg! – raising a fantastic £275 in the process!
Emily then entered the Adidas 5k Challenge in early September running the course in under 30 minutes and Emma now plans to take part in the ‘Run to the Beat’ half-marathon to mark this year’s National Eczema Week. To sponsor her challenge visit www.justgiving.com/Emma-Hall

Information Afternoon and Sponsored Walk
An Information afternoon was held on Saturday 9 May in the Education Room at Guildford Cathedral. Entitled: “Understanding eczema: What’s New?” Dr Mike Ardern-Jones, Senior Lecturer/Consultant Dermatologist at the University of Southampton was the speaker. There were demonstrations of various things that are helpful for people living with eczema and an opportunity to meet other people. The room was full to capacity and we were delighted to join four new members that afternoon. We are most grateful to the speaker and to Quality Water, Stiefel and Espere healthcare for their sponsorship of the afternoon. *Thanks to Kinetico for donating a Mac 7000 Drinking water system as a raffle prize.
The following day, the annual Sponsored Walk, organised by the Surrey Advertiser and Rotary, was held through miles of rolling Surrey hills. Pictured above are: Vicky Robinson, Tracy Backhurst, Tom Robinson, Emma Hall, Emma Backhurst, Richard Backhurst, Colin Backhurst and Emily Robinson. Then for the raffle, Sarah Lovegrove is with Emily Robinson.

Guildford Festival Market
The predicted rain held off for the Guildford Festival Market at the end of June and the temperatures soared to 29 degrees. We set up our stall on the High Street early in the morning and raised over £330 by selling second-hand books, NES cards and plants. We also had the opportunity to talk to people about eczema and the Society. Helping to set up, man the stall and clear away at the end were Tracy Backhurst, Jan Benton, Belinda and Ivor Davies, Helen Lovegrove, Sarah Lovegrove and Martin, Ruth Mason, Lindy Mitchley, Vicky Robinson, Catherine Rowley and Avril Vora.
