Topical Corticosteroids

Topical’ means something that is applied to the skin. Topical corticosteroids reduce inflammation and can be very effective in controlling flare-ups, as they make the skin less itchy and sore, giving it a chance to heal.

Steroids are a group of hormones produced naturally by glands in the body. Those used for treating eczema are mostly synthetic forms of these hormones in ointment, cream or lotion. Steroid preparations for severe eczema are taken by mouth and are known as oral steroids. They are different from topical corticosteroids. They come in ointment, cream, and lotion in four different strengths:

  • Mild
  • Moderately potent
  • Potent
  • Very potent

Some are intended to be applied once a day, others more often. Doctors usually prescribe the lowest strength suitable for your eczema.

In deciding which type you need, your doctor will take account of your age, the severity of the eczema, where it occurs and any other treatments you are using. Milder preparations are usually used for the face, genital areas or in babies.

The period of time a steroid may be used depends upon the severity of the eczema and the potency of the cream or ointment. Your doctor will advise you on this.

Some people worry about the side effects of topical corticosteroids, such as thinning of the skin. Side effects can occur, but are usually due to incorrect use and are often reversible. Applied appropriately with advice about how to apply from your doctor, nurse and/or the National Eczema Society, corticosteroids are a safe and effective treatment for eczema.

The topical corticosteroids used for treating eczema are totally different from steroids used in contraceptive pills or for bodybuilding.
