CAN YOU LEND A HAND FOR ECZEMA?

Issy 2

Inspired by seeing her two daughters, Beth and Issy, both battle with eczema from birth, Vicki Jones launched the ‘3-signatures project’ in our September 2010 issue to raise awareness of the condition and vital funds for the National Eczema Society.

The concept behind the fundraising idea was to add to Issy’s existing autograph collection, while also gathering them to sell and auction - with all the money raised going to the National Eczema Society in thanks for the invaluable support it has provided to the family over the years.

Issy explains: ‘I ask each celebrity for three autographs - one for me, one to sell and one to auction as part of a book at the end of the project.  I’ve written letters and sent emails and I’m learning as I go along what is the most successful approach, as celebrities get so many requests.  It requires a lot of patience so I am going to keep going for another year!

‘However, when an envelope arrives it’s very exciting and I try to guess who it is before I open it.  Danni Minogue’s came the Monday after she had won the X-Factor with Matt and I’ve also had good responses from David Cameron and Michael Gambon (Dumbledore).

‘If you have any suggestions, advice or contacts to help us with the project, please send details to info@eczema.org.

THE FAIR IN THE SQUARE - HIGHGATE VILLAGE

Saturday, 18th June 2011 saw our very own Chief Executive, Margaret Cox, promoting the National Eczema Society at her local event - the “Fair in the Square, Highgate”.  Margaret was joined by volunteers, Diana Jones and Sue Ward (ex member of staff).

The Mayor of Camden officially opened the event, before the Hornsey School for Girls’ steel band kick-start it with some tropical sounds.  Over 200 people were involved in stage performances, ranging from music and dance to martial arts. Acts included a Cuban band, circus performers, salsa, ballet and belly-dancing.  The fair’s 130 stalls stretch from Pond Square to St. Michael’s Church, selling gifts and knick-knacks as well as food stalls selling tasty treats.

Marje Isabelle, chair of fair’s committee, said: “The fair is Highgate’s biggest day out. It’s fun for all the family, and also free. You get the opportunity to meet your neighbours and make new friends.”

Despite some wet and windy weather conditions, the National Eczema Society had a steady stream of interest and although we saw more adults with eczema than anticipated, we had plenty of information on hand to provide help and advice for both adults and children.

If there is a local event or fete in your area and you and/or friends and family would be interested in manning a National Eczema Society information stand, please contact info@eczema.org.  We will be more than happy to provide supplies of information booklets, back copies of Exchange and anything else that may be required.

LANGDON PARK SCHOOL - SUMMER FETE

Another sunny Saturday (2nd July) in London saw our Chief Executive attending the Healthy Lifestyle Event at Langdon Park School (Sports College) in Tower Hamlets, London, providing lots of practical advice and distributing our information resources about living with eczema, for both adults and children.

The event was well attended with a diverse range of activities including Steel Pans, Hula Hoops and Juggling, together with lots of “healthy” refreshments including “healthy” pizza and burgers and “healthy” cakes!

As well as ourselves, other organisations with information stands included Asthma UK, the Department of Health and Diabetes UK.

As you can see below, it looks like everyone had a lot of fun.  Thanks to all those who stopped by to say hello and thanks also to people who generously put money in our collecting tin!
